Pfizer Inc. has been ordered to pay $1.2 billion in penalties and fines for selling more than 100 counterfeit drugs. The company is facing a new lawsuit against it by its generic rivals, including Pfizer Inc.
“It is a scandal that we have no legal recourse for a criminal prosecution,” said Jim Rourke, the executive director of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. “Our company faces another fraud charge of producing counterfeit drugs.”
A former Pfizer employee said the company has received hundreds of thousands of emails since the drugmaker, which has generated nearly $3 billion in revenues for the company, agreed to plead guilty and pay $2.2 billion to resolve the case. The civil suit was filed in federal court in Virginia. It alleges Pfizer had illegally sold the drugs without the knowledge of its patients, which resulted in the company paying doctors’ fees for the prescriptions.

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) issued a consumer safety warning about the sale of some erectile dysfunction medicines in the UK.
The NABP said the following medicines should not be taken for a long-term treatment:
Viagra, Sildenafil and Tadalafil are all PDE5 inhibitors. They have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden death, and should therefore not be used by men over 50.
The NABP said there is insufficient evidence to support the use of PDE5 inhibitors in men taking any form of phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, was initially approved for use as a treatment for erectile dysfunction but is now considered to be a more effective treatment for premature ejaculation.
A new study by the University of Liverpool found that men taking Viagra had a 50% higher rate of erectile dysfunction than men taking a placebo.
Men in the study who used the medication had a significantly lower rate of ejaculation and a significantly lower rate of ejaculation disorder than those who used the medication for no apparent reason.
The NABP said it was not able to establish whether men taking PDE5 inhibitors had a higher incidence of sexual dysfunction.
The NABP also found that use of Viagra is associated with a 50% lower rate of sexual desire and a significantly lower rate of sexual arousal and satisfaction.
The NABP said: "This is the first study to link sexual dysfunction with an increased risk of death and sexual dysfunction in men taking sildenafil. Sildenafil has been associated with a lower risk of premature ejaculation and a shorter duration of sexual activity compared with the placebo."
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) said consumer safety was the top priority for the NABP.It said it was reviewing the safety profile of the medicines so that more research is conducted on the issue. It is also working with regulatory authorities on how to ensure the medicines are safe, as well as on how to safeguard consumers from dangerous side effects.
Pfizer Inc. said: "We urge all pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals to review the safety and efficacy of PDE5 inhibitors, as well as the risks and side effects associated with their use."
